Standards-compliant industry ECU software with RAMS characteristics

Large diesel and gas engines play a crucial role in many applications such as decentralized power and heat generation, emergency power generators, ship propulsion, construction machinery, military systems, and more. System manufacturers are facing major challenges. In the future, the three key factors to successfully address promising growth markets and applications will be the evidence of a standards-compliant systems and software development, rising RAMS requirements and the increasing integration of systems.

"RAMS" stands for Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety. Practical experience has shown that this integrated approach to requirements is accurate and that its consistent implementation leads to particularly safe and sustained solutions incurring only low operating and maintenance costs. These requirements, however, result in major challenges for project leaders and development teams: In addition to the required functions, RAMS requirements are a central theme of the development process. The relevant standards such as ISO 13849-1, IEC 61508, IEC 60880 and of course DO-178B require consistent planning, implementation and documentation of all subprocesses such as requirements specification, architecture- and design development, implementation as well as integration and test – each of them being connected with substantial verification steps at the end of each stage.

For mastering the complex process chain, Berner & Mattner systematically applies its established model-based development method with frontloading tests. Model-based specification and development are particularly suitable for engine control systems with a combination of "state-based" (for operating modes) and "continuous" functions (for the control units).

Benefits

Berner & Mattner's customers benefit from several advantages:

a.) The reliably documented and standards-compliant development process facilitates certification due to better comprehensibility of the development results.

b.) Function and interface specifications enable the early detection and cost-effective fixing of logical function and integration errors by means of model execution.

c.) The significantly decreasing number of errors detected at a later stage optimizes the required project budget, while at the same time enabling the crucial adherence to project deadlines.
